The Flower Market
Found between Vieux Nice and the sea front at the foot of the Chateau, the Cours Saleya is said to be the heart of Nice Each day this morning market offers much more than just cut flowers. It sells plants, cacti, local fresh fruit, vegetables, delicatessen products, bread, olives, socca and glaced fruits.
Don’t assume everything is marked up for tourists - it is terrific value.. This is where the Nicios do their daily shopping. The fruit is from heaven - sugar-sweet clementines from Corsica, figs and grapes from Provence, exotic Kaki-fruit, lychee, or simple apples bursting with flavour.
Here you may be introduced to the novelty of French market pricing. Look around before you buy, for no discernable reason there may be wide differences in price between different stalls.
The Cours Saleya is lined with restaurants and brasseries open from morning to night. It’s a great place to sit with a beer or coffee and watch the world go by.. Everyone passes through here, often stopping just for the buzz.
Each Monday a large antique market fills the market space. Nice Port also has an antiques arcade on the right hand side as you walk toward the ocean…Filled with strange and very French knickknacks it’s worth a look. Also check out the antique shops on the road around the back of the Colline du Chateau just before the Place Garibaldi and Old town.
